Prompt Injection¶
Practice in Scenario 14, Scenario 15, and Scenario 17.
The technique in the real world¶
Prompt injection is getting a model to follow your instruction instead of its operator's. It comes in two forms:
- Direct — the instruction rides in the user input, straight past whatever input filter the app puts in front of the model.
- Indirect — the instruction hides in content the model later retrieves — a RAG document, a tool result, a web page — so a benign user query pulls it in and executes it. This is the more dangerous form: the attacker never talks to the model directly, and the payload persists.
The essential discipline for either form is separating retrieved / reached from obeyed. A payload arriving at the model is not influence; a payload the model acts on is.
How it works — and how you prove it¶
The verification trick is a marker: embed an instruction to emit a unique nonce token, then look for that token in the output. A random marker cannot be produced by chance or hallucinated, so its presence is proof the injection was both reached and obeyed — even if every other signal was stripped.
Direct (input-filter bypass). agent inject carries one instruction — emit the --marker
token — through several framings: a naive direct control (what a keyword filter is built to
catch), then polite, roleplay, delimiter/system-note, and format reframings of the same
request.
Indirect (through RAG). rag poison ingests an attacker document, then queries the trigger
topic and checks the generated answer for the --obey-marker token.

Reading the result honestly¶
Both verbs grade the three distinct outcomes distinctly:

The key honesty line: reaching past a filter is not, by itself, influence. Getting a reframed
payload to the model without compliance stays reachable — you proved the input filter is weak, not
that you moved the model. Injection tops out at influenced (attacker-controlled output); it does
not claim execution or a confirmed read. Whether a given model complies is the model's business, and
the result is reported either way.
Retrieved ≠ obeyed
In RAG, a poisoned document surfacing in the citations and the model obeying its embedded
instruction are two separate claims with the same influenced ceiling but very different
meanings. --obey-marker is what lets you assert the stronger one honestly.
